The outcome of the recent presidential and congressional elections indicates that abortion is likely to continue to be completely legal in America. With a decidedly “pro-abortion” Congress, a “pro-abortion” President, and his ability to name “pro-abortion” federal judges, all the inroads made by individual states to place some limits on abortion are in danger of being reversed.
Despite what appears to be a disappointing outcome, we must not stop fighting for the right to life and trusting in our God to deliver. We must remember that God is still absolutely in charge and has not failed us. He is God and He has His reasons for allowing this to happen. After all, He is the God of miracles and can use even this seemingly “impossible” scenario to bring about victory.
Just as important, I believe God is using this situation to cause us to lean in closer to Him for our direction. To trust Him and rely on Him even more. I believe God is telling us to remember that first and foremost, this is a spiritual, not a political battle.
Our civil governments are here to administer justice and peace by maintaining the values and standards as defined by society in their civil laws. Those civil laws reflect the collective “will of the people.” In order to change civil law, the will of the people has to change. We need to focus less on our efforts to change the laws of the land and concentrate more on His strategy for changing the hearts of the people. After all, even if abortion is abolished by law, the practice of it will not end until abortion is first abolished in the minds and hearts of the people.
The trouble today is not the legality of ‘abortion-on-demand.’ it is that abortion is in such demand! Frankly, we live in a society that by-and-large considers it OK to kill an unborn child. It’s a society that thinks there should be no personal consequences for sinful behavior, and that personal comfort and convenience are more important than the life of the unborn child. The trouble today is not that abortion is legal, it is that abortion is OK!
During the nineteen sixties, a prominent anti-war slogan was, “Suppose they gave a war and nobody came?” Meaning, even if a war was declared, if no one showed up to fight in it, the war would fail to materialize. A war cannot occur without participants.
So, suppose we were to apply that to abortion? Suppose women could still legally kill their unborn babies, but no one wanted to? Suppose Planned Parenthood opened an abortion facility in your neighborhood, but there was no demand, no customers?
What would happen if everyone in the whole community were to believe that abortion is very wrong? What if our society so abhorred abortion that it would not even be considered an option? What if the dominant culture was one that followed the laws of an unfailing, righteous, eternal God, instead of the flawed laws of man?
Our mission as followers of Christ, is to be the salt and light that transforms those around us; and by extension, change our culture to reflect the righteousness of Jesus Christ.
Let’s seek God to learn his strategies on how we can make the very notion of abortion so repulsive and unthinkable, that no one will want one. If we eliminate the “demand” for abortions the “supply” (those that provide abortion “services”) will go out of business. And million of innocent lives will be saved.
Most of all, press in and ask God how he can use us to transform our Hawaii through the ministry he has supernaturally given each and every one of us to transform the lives around us. That we will no longer be a people who rationalize that the taking of innocent lives is OK. This is how we get rid of the curse of abortion.
And please don’t forget those who have been fighting this battle for years, faithfully praying, providing finances, giving of their time and taking direct actions maintaining vigils and protests, to stop the shedding of innocent blood. These frontline soldiers are in need of encouragement, support and, even more... reinforcements. Participate in the public campaigns to save lives. Hawaii Right to Life, Aloha Pregnancy Care and Counseling Center, Hawaii Family Forum, 40 Days for Life, and others on the front line, deserve your prayers, your time and support.
