Next Year, 2009, the State of Hawaii is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It is an awkward celebration for the state. Since its admission to the union in 1959, Hawaii has had a designated Statehood Day holiday (in August) and used have vigorous annual celebrations. But those state-sponsored celebrations petered out after 1993, the 100th Anniversary of the Overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
That year, both the State Legislature and the U.S. Congress issued apologies for the wrongful 1893 take-over of the government of the sovereign nation of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The apologies of course, added to the many questions that had been growing steadily since the seventies about the validity of the U.S. presence in Hawaii and statehood. This placed a huge damper on ‘statehood celebrations.’
A couple of years ago, patriotic Americans here in Hawaii began insisting that the state should gear up for this jubilee. The 50th anniversary year is not something the state can ignore, especially when, at the time in 1959, Hawaii was so jubilant over becoming a state of the United States of America. So legislation was dutifully passed for the celebration.
Even the commission appointed for the 50th Anniversary of Hawaii’s Statehood has decided to use the term “commemoration” instead of “celebration” in deference to the “feelings” of those who believe the state is illegal. (How can you celebrate something that many have come to believe was founded on criminal actions?) Thus, the commemoration will be toned down. Outside of the media campaign, only two public events are being planned, one in March and one in August.
On top of that, are pending legal and political considerations (discussed in other parts of this newsletter) that challenge the very legitimacy of the State of Hawaii. These challenges could result in exposure of the State of Hawaii as a fraudulent entity. Then, what?
This could indeed be a jubilee year, but not in the manner the state expected...
